Former Boulder Swim Coach Sentenced to 42 Years for Sexual Abuse, US

0

DENVER — A former Boulder swim coach was sentenced to 42 years to life in prison for sexually abusing three teenagers on the team.

Jon Beber coached the club team Boulder Swimming from 1997 to early 2002. He left the team and Colorado in 2002 when abuse allegations surfaced, according to the 20th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Beber went on to coach swim teams in Albany, New York, Florida and Atlanta.

The district attorney’s office said three victims came forward in 2022. Beber was arrested in July 2022 in Atlanta for three charges of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.

Following a trial, a jury found Beber guilty of two counts of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust – pattern of abuse and one count of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.

On Friday, Beber was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for each count of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust – pattern of abuse and six years in prison for sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust. The prison terms will run consecutively, bringing the sentence to 42 years to life in prison.

This lengthy prison sentence is the right outcome. As the judge noted, this type of case is every parent’s worst nightmare. Parents drop kids off for practice or school and hope that the adults in charge are not abusing their position of trust, said District Attorney Michael Dougherty in a statement. This defendant did exactly that, for years. It is only because of the victims’ courage and perseverance that we were able to bring charges all these years later and secure justice for them and their families.

Beber was also sentenced to 20 years to life of parole for each count of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust – pattern of abuse.

Global IT Outage Fallout: Weeks of Recovery Ahead in Largest Crisis Ever, UK

0

After an IT failure wreaked havoc around the globe, many experts believe that full recovery of the issue could take weeks. On Friday, services began to come back online by evening, however, the problem that led to the outage wasn’t completely solved.

What is touted as the largest IT outage in history, affected airports, healthcare services, and businesses. Flights and hospital appointments were either canceled or the operations were done manually after a botched software upgrade hit Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

The problematic update came from the US cybersecurity company CrowdStrike and the issue left people around the world facing a blue screen of death. Shortly after the news broke out, many experts claimed that every affected PC may have to be fixed manually. However, most of the Microsoft services started to recover by Friday evening.

While explaining the aftermath of the outage, many experts said that the whole ordeal underscored concerns that many organizations were not well prepared to implement a solid contingency plan, The Guardian reported.

They also gave a grim warning that these outages will happen again until more contingencies are built into networks and organizations introduce better backups. In the United Kingdom, Whitehall crisis officials conducted a meeting of the Cobra Committee.

Meanwhile, the country’s Transport Secretary Louise Haigh, said she was working at pace with industry after trains and flights were affected.

Many people are being affected by today’s IT outages impacting services across the country and globally, UK MP Pat McFadden wrote on X, formally known as Twitter.

Ministers are working with their sectors and respective industries on the issue. Many people are being affected by today’s IT outages impacting services across the country and globally. Ministers are working with their sectors and respective industries on the issue.

Amid the growing concerns, a Microsoft spokesperson said on Friday: We’re aware of an issue affecting Windows devices due to an update from a third-party software platform. We anticipate a resolution is forthcoming.

Meanwhile, Texas-based CrowdStrike’s founder George Kurtz, said he was deeply sorry for the impact that we’ve caused to customers, adding there had been a negative interaction between the update and Microsoft’s operating system. In a ripple effect to the whole ordeal, CrowdStrike’s stock price fell dramatically, dropping as much as 13 per cent at some point of the trading day.

While commenting on the matter, Tory Hunt, one of the leading cyber experts said that such kind of outage is unprecedented. I don’t think it’s too early to call it: this will be the largest IT outage in history, he tweeted.

This is basically what we were all worried about with Y2K, except it’s happened this time, he added. Hunt was referring to the millennium bug that worried IT experts in the run-up to the year 2000 – but ultimately did not cause serious damage.

Plight of Palestinian Refugees in Lebanon’s Al Biddawi Camp: A Story of Resilience

0

On the outskirts of Lebanon’s second capital, Tripoli, lies a Palestinian refugee camp that is almost as old as their plight itself. The Al Biddawi camp for Palestine refugees was established in 1955 to host many of those who had been forcibly displaced from the Upper Galilee and northern coastal cities during what is known as the Palestinian Nakba, or catastrophe in Arabic. Since then, the camp’s population has ballooned as violence continued to haunt the stateless population, from the Lebanese civil war to the conflict in Syria, which resulted in a flood of Syrian and Palestinian refugees across the border into the tiny Mediterranean country.

The narrow and destitute streets are symbolic of the struggle to survive here. In this single square kilometre, more than 21,000 Palestinians live alongside many impoverished Lebanese citizens and Syrian refugees, according to the UN’s Palestinian relief agency, UNRWA. Ahmad* is an unemployed father of eight who suffers from several chronic illnesses. Despite the windows being blocked by other buildings in close proximity, they keep them open in an effort to ease the scorching heat. Ahmad said he often can’t find anyone to lend him money until some relief comes from UNRWA’s cash assistance. The agency provides him with $50 per child under 18 years of age every 12 weeks. UNRWA is the mark of the plight of Palestinian refugees. As long as there is a question of Palestinian refugees, UNRWA has to exist in parallel. At 67 years old, Abdul Sattar Hasan is the descendant of a refugee from the village of Sepphoris, located northwest of Nazareth, and has been coming to this health centre for over 22 years.

UNRWA is doing what it can to support the Palestinian population in the Al Biddawi camp and across the entire region, providing education, health, protection, and social services. If UNRWA disappeared tomorrow, there would be a catastrophe in this camp because we don’t have any other humanitarian actor that can provide the level of assistance that UNRWA is providing. The economic deterioration has led to a lack of work opportunities even for Lebanese citizens. The UNRWA official highlighted the battle of cancer patients, explaining that the agency covers 75 per cent of the cost of medication. Dr. Ghuniem stressed that the question of Palestinian refugees is what perpetuates the need for UNRWA to exist.

The camp’s only UNRWA-run health facility has 28 staff members, all of whom are Palestinian refugees themselves. It serves 400 to 500 patients daily, providing a wide array of services from dental and optical care to general medicine and specialised consultations. It is the mark of the Palestinian people’s suffering from harsh economic and living conditions. You get the feeling that employees here aren’t working to get a salary. They are working to deliver a message, and this is something that I respect and very much appreciate. The question of our refugee status since 1948 until today. It defends us and provides us with our basic needs until we can return to our land, God willing.

A woman whose murder conviction was overturned after she served 43 years in prison was released on Friday. Sandra Hemme, 63, reunited with her family at a nearby park in Chillicothe, Missouri, after being freed following a court battle led by the state’s attorney general. Hemme’s conviction was overturned last month, but efforts to keep her in prison continued until a judge intervened, threatening to hold the attorney general’s office in contempt. Hemme, who had been incarcerated for the 1980 stabbing death of a library worker, was determined to be actually innocent by the courts. Despite facing additional sentences for prison crimes, Hemme’s release was finally secured.

El Paso Man Sentenced to 19 Years for Shooting at Border Patrol Agent in New Mexico, US

0

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A federal judge sentenced an El Paso man to 19 years in prison for shooting at a U.S. Border Patrol agent, announced the U.S. District Attorney of New Mexico on Friday.

Robert Esquivel was convicted of attempted murder of an officer, aggravated assault of an officer with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm, and conspiracy to transport migrants in the U.S. illegally.

According to court records, Esquivel fired at an unnamed agent, hitting him twice in the torso during a routine immigration inspection on a rural stretch of New Mexico highway. Esquivel, a U.S. citizen, was transporting five individuals who had entered the country illegally. He later confessed to illegally transporting migrants on four separate occasions.

Despite sustaining gunshot wounds, the agent survived due to his ballistic vest.

Following the shooting, Esquivel fled the scene but lost control of his vehicle, causing it to roll over multiple times. Court records indicated that passengers in the car urged Esquivel to stop as he attempted to escape.

Esquivel’s attorney from the federal public defender’s office was not available for comment at the time.

The sentencing of Esquivel serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers working to uphold border security and immigration laws.
