A woman whose murder conviction was overturned after she served 43 years in prison was released on Friday. Sandra Hemme, 63, reunited with her family at a nearby park in Chillicothe, Missouri, after being freed following a court battle led by the state’s attorney general. Hemme’s conviction was overturned last month, but efforts to keep her in prison continued until a judge intervened, threatening to hold the attorney general’s office in contempt. Hemme, who had been incarcerated for the 1980 stabbing death of a library worker, was determined to be actually innocent by the courts. Despite facing additional sentences for prison crimes, Hemme’s release was finally secured.
