UN Chief Calls for Global Action as Kenya Grapples with Climate Chaos

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for increased global climate action to address the devastating effects of climate change and support Africa’s transition to renewable energy. Speaking at the first Africa Climate Summit, Guterres emphasized the need for collaboration between African countries, developed nations, financial institutions, and technology companies to establish an African Renewable Energy Alliance. This alliance would unlock Africa’s renewable energy potential and contribute to a just and equitable green transition. Guterres also highlighted the need to reform the global financial system to address the higher borrowing costs faced by African countries compared to the United States and Europe. President William Ruto echoed Guterres’ sentiments, emphasizing the courage of African entrepreneurs and innovators in pursuing breakthroughs and exploiting opportunities. The Africa Climate Summit also saw the launch of Kenya’s green hydrogen strategy and roadmap, which presents an opportunity to reduce transport costs, produce steel for infrastructure projects, and create jobs. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the Africa Development Bank, stressed the importance of fully unlocking Africa’s renewable energy potential and providing stable, affordable, and reliable power to every home, school, and hospital. President Ruto highlighted the impact of climate change on African countries, calling for urgent action and resource allocation to combat these challenges. Guterres pledged to work closely with African leaders and organizations like the African Union to build a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable future for Africa. The ACS serves as a platform for addressing climate change in Africa and finding innovative solutions to mitigate its effects.
