The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has pledged $100 million (Dhs367 million) to support development projects in countries affected by irregular immigration. This commitment includes backing initiatives proposed in the Rome Process. UAE’s President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan made this announcement at the International Conference on Development and Migration in Rome on Sunday.
President Sheikh Mohamed emphasized that irregular migration poses one of the most critical challenges facing the world today, claiming thousands of lives each year. To address this phenomenon, he stressed the need for comprehensive solutions rooted in development and stability. Development is seen as the key to achieving peace and stability, both within societies and on an international scale.
The President further stated that dealing with cases of displacement, whether it involves asylum or migration, requires strengthening joint efforts and close cooperation between all affected countries. This includes countries of origin, transit, and those hosting migrants, as well as the support of international and regional agencies. The aim is to build on previous progress in addressing these challenges.
President Sheikh Mohamed also highlighted that the conference comes at a crucial stage in the world and calls for greater cooperation and solidarity among nations. He emphasized that collective action and building bridges of cooperation are essential to tackling shared global challenges and ensuring a prosperous future for coming generations.
During the conference, President Sheikh Mohamed was received by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The UAE delegation included Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Ali bin Hammad Al Shamsi, and Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy.
The UAE, as it gears up to host the COP28 climate summit in Dubai in November, recognizes climate change as one of the key drivers of irregular migration. The President stated that climate change leads to drought, agricultural crop destruction, and increased poverty in many countries. He highlighted that the climate conference seeks to accelerate international efforts to address the impacts of climate change and support the implementation of outcomes from previous conferences.
Lastly, President Sheikh Mohamed reaffirmed the UAE’s belief in the importance of diplomacy and dialogue as tools for building trust. He called for global cooperation for the greater good of humanity.
Through its significant financial commitment and emphasis on development, stability, and cooperation, the UAE is taking proactive steps to address the challenges posed by irregular migration. The country’s focus on comprehensive solutions and international collaboration demonstrates its commitment to finding lasting solutions to global issues and promoting a better future for all.
