St. Louis Braces for Historic Heat Wave
St. Louis is currently facing a dangerous and historic heat wave that is wreaking havoc on the region. The combination of scorching temperatures and high humidity has already resulted in some of the highest heat index values ever recorded in the area. Tuesday reached a peak heat index of 117 degrees, matching Sunday’s record. This heat wave is not only intense but also unusually long-lasting, with the excessive heat warning extended until Friday night.
According to Matt Beitscher, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, this heat wave is of a very rare kind. It is the hottest weather the region has experienced since 1995 when the heat index reached a local record of 120 degrees. The forecast predicts that Wednesday’s heat index will crest around 115 degrees, followed by 112 degrees on Thursday. If Friday is equally hot, it would mark a tying record streak of six consecutive days with a heat index of 110 degrees or higher.
The relentless heat poses significant health risks, especially considering the high temperatures at night, which are expected to only drop to around 79 or 80 degrees. This continuous heat without any relief increases the dangers of slow dehydration and other heat-related illnesses. Dr. Peter Panagos, an emergency physician, warns of the cumulative effects of prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
To combat the dangerous conditions, various public cooling centers have been set up across the region. St. Louis alone offers more than 20 cooling centers, many of which are located in libraries. Additionally, St. Louis County and the Salvation Army have collaborated to establish a 24-hour cooling center with a capacity for up to 30 people.
