Kylian Mbappe Signs with Real Madrid on Five-Year Deal, France

0

NEW DELHI: Real Madrid have announced the signing of France forward Kylian Mbappe on a five-year contract as a free agent, bringing an end to a transfer saga that lasted for years. The move sees the European champions secure their newest Galactico, adding a formidable talent to their squad.

Real Madrid C. F. and Kylian Mbappe have reached an agreement whereby he will be a Real Madrid player for the next five seasons, the Spanish champions said in a statement, fresh off their 15th European Cup triumph.

The 25-year-old captain of the French national team had announced he was leaving Paris St Germain in a video posted on social media platform X on May 10.

Mbappe will officially join Real Madrid in July after his PSG contract expires on June 30. However, before joining the club, he will be unveiled as a Real Madrid player, and then he will join up with the France squad for the European Championship in Germany.

Mbappe joins a star-studded side in Madrid, featuring Ballon d’Or favorites Vinicius Jr. and Jude Bellingham, under the management of Italian Carlo Ancelotti, the most successful coach in Champions League history with five titles.

Despite winning numerous trophies at PSG, including domestic doubles and trebles, Mbappe has yet to clinch the Champions League, the only major honor missing from his impressive resume.

After seven years at PSG, during which he won six Ligue 1 titles and four French Cups, Mbappe leaves the club as their all-time top scorer with 256 goals.

Mbappe surprised PSG last year when he informed them he would not take up the option of a one-year contract extension, leading to a standoff with the club before eventually being reinstated to the first-team squad.

By allowing Mbappe to run down the final year of his contract, PSG was unable to recoup any of the 180 million euro ($195.95 million) transfer fee they paid in 2017 to sign him from AS Monaco.

Mbappe became the second-most expensive player of all time after his former PSG teammate Neymar, who was signed for 222 million euros from Barcelona in 2017.

Real Madrid had previously attempted to sign Mbappe but failed to do so, with Mbappe opting to sign a contract extension with PSG in May 2022 after Real Madrid’s bid was rejected.

With Mbappe finally joining their ranks, Real Madrid aims to consolidate their dominance in LaLiga, having won the title by 10 points last season with only one loss, and remaining unbeaten in the Champions League.

Nigel Farage Reverses Decision, Joins Election for Reform UK Leader

0

London, Jun 3 (PTI) Nigel Farage, the former chief of the erstwhile Brexit Party and UK Independence Party (UKIP), on Monday announced that he had changed his mind to overturn a previous decision not to contest the July 4 general election.

The controversial British politician told reporters at a press conference in London that he will take over the leadership of the anti-immigration Reform UK party and contest from the staunchly pro-Brexit seat of Clacton in Essex, south-east England.

Farage, 60, claimed he had a terrible sense of guilt for not putting himself forward when the election was called, saying he felt he was letting [his supporters] down after he had ruled out contesting.

I’ve changed my mind. It’s allowed, you know, it’s not always a sign of weakness. It could potentially be a sign of strength, said Farage.

So, I am going to stand in this election. I’ll be launching my candidacy at midday [on Tuesday] in the Essex seaside town of Clacton. I can’t turn my back on the people’s army. I can’t turn my back on those millions of people who followed me, believed in me despite the horrendous things that were being said about me, he said.

His decision to jump into the fray will rattle Prime Minister Rishi Sunak-led Conservative Party, which is already trailing in all pre-election surveys, as it could mean a loss of votes further to the right of the political spectrum to the Farage-led Reform UK.

It will also give Farage the chance to take part in television debates, where the impassioned campaigner will use the podium to attack the main political parties.

Ahead of the announcement on Monday evening, Sunak was asked what impact Farage as a candidate could have on the Tory chances.

One of the two people will be prime minister – either [Labour leader] Keir Starmer or me. A vote for anyone who’s not a Conservative candidate is just a vote to put Keir Starmer in Number 10, he responded, sending out a clear message to his party’s hard-core supporters.

Meanwhile, a major new YouGov poll released by ‘Sky News’ on Monday claims the Opposition Labour Party could be on course to win a historic landslide of a 194-seat majority. The poll has Labour on 422 seats, up 222 compared to the 2019 results based on newly carved constituency boundaries.

This projection is the highest number of Labour seats on record, and a much bigger majority than anything seen in the UK since the Second World War. PTI AK GSP GSP

Neurocrine Biosciences’ CAHtalyst™ Study Shows Promising Results for CAH Treatment, US

Neurocrine’s Crinecerfont shows promise in CAH Phase 3 trial By Investing.com

SAN DIEGO – Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. announced today that its CAHtalyst™ Adult Phase 3 study has met its primary and key secondary endpoints, indicating potential benefits for adults with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency. The study focused on crinecerfont, an investigational treatment aimed at reducing glucocorticoid doses while maintaining androgen control.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled trial encompassed 182 participants over 24 weeks. Results showed that crinecerfont-treated participants achieved a significant reduction in glucocorticoid doses compared to the placebo group, with 62.7% of participants on crinecerfont reaching a physiologic glucocorticoid dose as opposed to 17.5% on placebo.

Moreover, crinecerfont demonstrated a significant decrease in androstenedione levels, an adrenal androgen, compared to an increase in the placebo group at Week 4. This reduction was maintained throughout the trial, even with the lowered glucocorticoid doses, suggesting a non-glucocorticoid mechanism for androgen control.

The implications of these findings are noteworthy as CAH patients often suffer from conditions related to high glucocorticoid levels, such as osteoporosis and diabetes, due to the standard treatment approach. Crinecerfont’s ability to lower glucocorticoid dosing to more physiological levels while controlling androgen excess could potentially mitigate these comorbidities.

Short-term favorable trends were also observed in endpoints like body weight, insulin resistance, and glucose tolerance, alongside an increase in bone turnover markers, indicating a possible relief from glucocorticoid-induced suppression.

Crinecerfont was generally well-tolerated, with fatigue and headache being the most common adverse events. No serious adverse events were attributed to the treatment, and there were few discontinuations due to adverse events.

The results from this study, which have been published in The New England Journal of Medicine, support the submissions of two New Drug Applications to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in April 2024.

As Neurocrine Biosciences makes strides with its CAHtalyst™ Adult Phase 3 study, investors are watching closely, and the latest metrics from InvestingPro offer a snapshot of the company’s financial health. Neurocrine Biosciences is expected to grow its net income this year, aligning with the positive outlook presented by the successful clinical trial results. With 9 analysts having revised their earnings downwards for the upcoming period, it suggests caution, yet the company’s fundamentals remain strong. Neurocrine operates with a moderate level of debt and has liquid assets that exceed short-term obligations, which may provide financial flexibility for ongoing research and development activities.

Australian Treasurer Orders China-Linked Investors to Sell Rare Earths Miner Shares

Australian treasurer Jim Chalmers has ordered several China-linked investors to dispose of shares in rare earths miner Northern Minerals on national interest grounds, a spokesperson said on Monday.

Northern Minerals is developing the Browns Range heavy rare earths project in Western Australia, at a time when the sector has become increasingly strategic for its uses in green energy and defence.

A disposal order issued by Chalmers on Sunday said Yuxiao Fund had 60 days to dispose of 80-million shares it bought in September. Yuxiao Fund is the Singapore-registered private investment vehicle of Chinese national Wu Yuxiao, Reuters has previously reported.

Northern Minerals chair Adam Handley in a statement to Reuters said that it had referred certain share buying activity to the FIRB to investigate last October.

Other foreign shareholders ordered to dispose of shares within 60 days include Ximei Liu, Xi Wang, and Black Stone Resources, the notice said.

The Treasurer has issued orders that Yuxiao Fund and four associates reduce their shareholdings in Northern Minerals, a spokesperson for Chalmers said in a statement on Monday.

The decision, based on advice from the Foreign Investment Review Board, is designed to protect our national interest and ensure compliance with our foreign investment framework.

Browns Range is set to supply Iluka Resources’ Eneabba rare earths refinery under construction in Western Australia, which already has a A$1bn ($665.10m) funding pledge from the Australian government and is waiting on a decision for more.

Australia has said it is looking for friendly nations to build out its critical minerals industry as the West diversifies away from dominant producer China.

Last week Northern Minerals chair Nick Curtis exited the company’s board. Curtis declined to comment. Shares in Northern Minerals were little changed at A$0.035. The company’s AGM is on June 6. Canberra screens foreign investment in key sectors for national security, including critical minerals, and has blocked some Chinese deals which has irked Beijing. Australia is preparing for a visit by Chinese Premier Li Qiang later in June.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said on a visit in March that he hoped Australia would ensure its market environment did not discriminate against Chinese business.

Chalmers’ spokesperson said Australia’s foreign investment framework did not discriminate against any nation.

Ukrainian President Slams China for Supporting Russia in Prolonging War, Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has hit out at China for being ‘in the hands’ of Vladimir Putin.

The Ukrainian President accused the country – which is Russia’s top trade partner – of helping its invaders prolong the bloodshed after refusing to attend an upcoming peace summit in Switzerland. Speaking at the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Zelenskyy said: With Chinese support to Russia, the war will last longer.

The leader also slammed China for supplying Russia with dual-use items that the ‘US says are being used to rebuild Moscow’s defence industry’, reports the Financial Times. However, Zelenskyy says he did not meet any Chinese officials in Singapore, despite their attendance.

Russia, using Chinese influence in the region, using Chinese diplomats also, does everything to disrupt the peace summit, Zelenskyy said. Regrettably this is unfortunate that such a big independent powerful country as China is an instrument in the hands of Putin.

China had been calling for a peace conference that included Russia, which has not been invited to talks in Switzerland, slated to take place On June 15 – 16. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said: There is still a clear gap between the arrangements for the meeting and the demands of the Chinese side, as well as the general expectations of the international community. This makes it difficult for China to participate in the meeting.

Zelenskyy revealed he plans to use the summit to discuss nuclear security, the release of prisoners of war, and to call for Ukrainian children abducted by Russia to be returned safely. Time is running out, and the children are growing up in the Putin-land where they are taught to hate their homeland, he added.

The President has also urged POTUS Biden to attend the talks, arguing his absence would ‘only be met by an applause by Putin’. However, reports say the Democrat will miss the summit to attend a fundraiser in California.

Bruno Fernandes recently completed his fifth season at Manchester United. Having made 48 appearances last season, Fernandes netted 15 goals and registered 13 assists.

After failing to qualify for the Champions League, Manchester United are now reportedly expected to suffer a major setback in the transfer market. As per a report, the Premier League giants may very well have to deal with the shocking departure of Bruno Fernandes this summer.

An article published by Portuguese outlet O JOGO claims that Bayern Munich are talking to the Fernandes’ agent, Miguel Pinho. But Bayern Munich are understood to be not the only side who are willing to rope in the Portuguese midfielder.

The report claimed that Barcelona have also expressed a deep interest in landing Fernandes and that the Spanish outfit could soon open a negotiation for the Manchester United footballer.

Amid the rumours of his summer transfer, Bruno Fernandes himself had recently commented on the matter. I will be here until… I said the club needs to want me. I feel that is the case, the club wants me to be a part of the future. As I’ve always said, I don’t want to be a player that the club doesn’t want to have. If for some reason the club doesn’t want to have me I will go but if they want me I will stay, the 29-year-old had said as per Sport Bible.

Fernandes had arrived at the Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, he has scored 79 goals for Manchester United so far. Fernandes is contracted at Manchester United until 2026 and the club have the option to extend his stint for another year.

Manchester United could manage to finish at the eighth spot in the Premier League standings last season and they ended up at the bottom of their Champions League group. As per The Telegraph, Manchester United are ready to listen to offers for the majority of their first-team players this summer apart from a couple of rising stars. The article even claimed that the club are believed to be looking to sign a striker, central midfielder and right-sided centre-half this summer. Manchester United will, however, reportedly have to raise funds through sales to increase their transfer budget.
