Fires Claim 20 Lives Near Athens and Evros Region, Including Refugees | Greece in Mourning

In a devastating turn of events, wildfires continue to ravage Greece, claiming the lives of at least 20 individuals, including refugees and migrants. The blazes, which are still burning out of control in the foothills near Athens and the Evros region, near the border with Turkey, have left the nation in mourning.

Some of the worst fires are located near the outskirts of northwest Athens, where firefighters are battling to contain the flames. However, their efforts are being hampered by strong winds and scorching temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).

Tragically, 18 of those who lost their lives are believed to be refugees and migrants who recently crossed the border, seeking shelter in the forests north of the city of Alexandroupolis. These individuals sought refuge in the Dadia forest, close to the Turkish border. Greece has expressed its deepest condolences for the deaths in this region.

The victims were discovered on Tuesday near a shack outside the village of Avantas, to the north of Alexandroupolis. Despite alerts and evacuation messages sent through the mobile emergency service, their stay in the Dadia forest proved fatal.

It is challenging to identify the deceased due to the difficult circumstances. Authorities are relying on relatives to come forward to help establish their identities, making the process even more heartbreaking.

These fires pose yet another peril for migrants and refugees attempting to reach the European Union. In addition to the already considerable risks they face, such as violence, arrest, and drowning in the Mediterranean, they now must navigate through the ring of fire in northern Greece.

While there is speculation that the fires were caused by migrants crossing the border and seeking refuge in the forests, no evidence has been found to support this claim. Earlier this week, a video showing an individual detaining and accusing refugees and migrants of attempting to burn Greeks further fueled tensions. The video led to the arrest of the man involved and two others who were suspected of aiding him.

The situation on the Greek-Turkish border remains precarious. Throughout August, hundreds of people have attempted to cross the border daily, with many being apprehended by Greek authorities. People smuggling has become a thriving criminal enterprise.

Meanwhile, wildfires in Turkey’s Canakkale province continue for a second day, necessitating the evacuation of 1,200 residents from 11 villages. The flames have also led to the suspension of marine traffic in the Dardanelles Strait.

As the fires rage on, Greek officials have called for the evacuation of thousands of individuals from the district of Ano Liosia in the northwestern part of Athens. However, many residents have chosen to stay, despite the potential dangers.

The devastation caused by these wildfires highlights the urgent need for comprehensive efforts to address climate change and enhance fire prevention measures. Greece and Turkey, along with international partners, must work together to mitigate the impact of future wildfires and protect the lives of those affected.

The loss of 20 lives, including refugees and migrants seeking safety, reminds us of the desperation faced by those attempting to find sanctuary and the obstacles they encounter along their perilous journeys. Greece and the international community must unite to provide support and find sustainable solutions to prevent further tragedies.
