Drought in Texas Endangers Wildlife: Biologists Worried

The ongoing drought in Texas has biologists sounding the alarm as rivers begin to dry up, posing a serious threat to the wildlife that depends on them. Among the affected areas, the San Antonio region is fortunate to have federal safeguards in place to prevent the die-off of these vulnerable creatures during extreme drought conditions.

Caetano Rochelle, a regular paddleboarder on the San Marcos River, has observed firsthand the toll that the drought is taking. He recounts, For the first time ever, my paddleboard encountered rough rocks. As water levels recede, the available space for the creatures living in and around the river also diminishes. Chad Furl, a representative from the Edwards Aquifer Authority Habitat Conservation, explains, As the water retreats, so do the animals.

To combat the potential loss of endangered species in the region, the Edwards Aquifer Authority has implemented the Refugia Program in San Marcos. This program focuses on breeding and housing endangered species as a precautionary measure against catastrophic events such as severe droughts. While the current drought affects endangered species, biologists assure that it has not reached catastrophic levels.

One species of concern is the Texas blind salamander, which finds refuge in the Edwards Aquifer. As a result, biologists are not overly worried about its survival during this drought. However, they are closely monitoring the fate of the fountain darter. Known for its ability to hide and dart around, the fountain darter faces challenges when water flow decreases and temperatures rise. These changing conditions can lead to increased algae growth, which subsequently affects the plants crucial for the darter’s habitat. Biologist Katie Bockrateh emphasizes the potential consequences, as decreasing habitat availability, changes in plant association, and reductions in food and oxygen availability may all negatively impact the species.

Another species impacted by the drought is the Texas wild rice. Exclusive to the San Marcos River, this aquatic plant is facing reduced space for growth and reproduction due to low water levels. While the low water levels may tempt more people to stand in the river, it is crucial for recreational activities like tubing, swimming, and standing to avoid disturbing the Texas wild rice. Rochelle reminds us, If you’re running through it, you’re basically running through their house.

The current situation is a cause for concern among biologists and environmentalists, who have pointed out the potential long-term effects of the drought on Texas wildlife. It is crucial to find a balance between human activities and the preservation of these precious ecosystems. The efforts of the Edwards Aquifer Authority and other environmental organizations in safeguarding endangered species highlight the importance of implementing conservation measures to protect the diverse wildlife that call Texas rivers their home.
