Devastating Wildfire Sweeps Through Tenerife, Forcing Thousands to Flee
A massive wildfire continues to wreak havoc on the scenic Spanish island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. The fire shows no signs of slowing down, with hot, dry, and windy weather conditions hindering efforts to contain the blaze.
Emergency services reported that the fire has already affected 10 towns, and 11 have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. Thankfully, no major tourist areas have been affected thus far.
Due to worsening weather conditions overnight, authorities ordered evacuations throughout Saturday. During a news conference, Rosa Davila, the head of Tenerife’s local government, described the fire as devastating and announced new evacuations.
By Sunday morning, regional authorities revealed that a staggering 12,279 people had been evacuated, revising their earlier estimate of 26,000. However, the situation remains extremely challenging for firefighters as adverse weather conditions are expected to persist on Sunday.
The wildfire initially broke out on Wednesday in the rugged terrain of a national park near the Mount Teide volcano, which happens to be the highest peak in Spain. Since then, it has rapidly spread, now covering an area exceeding 8,000 hectares (20,000 acres) with a perimeter of 70 km (40 miles), up from 5,000 hectares and a 50 km perimeter on Saturday.
Despite the scale of the fire, popular tourist areas on Tenerife, which is part of the Canaries archipelago situated in the Atlantic Ocean, have remained untouched. Both airports on the island have continued to operate normally.
This devastating wildfire can be attributed, in part, to scorching heat and dry weather conditions that have prevailed throughout the summer in Europe. Similar wildfires have ravaged Spain’s La Palma island in July and parts of Canada. Tragically, earlier this month, blazes on Hawaii’s Maui island claimed the lives of over 110 people and left the historic resort city of Lahaina in ruins.
Scientists emphatically state that climate change plays a significant role in intensifying these extreme weather events, making them more frequent and powerful.
While firefighting efforts persist on Tenerife, the global community must recognize the urgent need for collective action against climate change.
