Climate Activists Arrested in Boston Demanding Fossil Fuel Ban

In an act of civil disobedience, climate activists from Extinction Rebellion Boston disrupted the morning commute in Boston, demanding that Governor Maura Healey take immediate action to ban fossil fuel infrastructure in the state. The protest resulted in the arrest of 20 individuals who were charged with unlawful assembly and disorderly conduct.

Extinction Rebellion Boston, a group devoted to raising awareness about the climate crisis, expressed their concerns in a statement during the protest. They called on Gov. Healey to announce a policy that prohibits any new fossil fuel infrastructure and commit to appointing opponents of such infrastructure to state agencies, including the Energy Facilities Siting Board and Department of Public Utilities. Additionally, the activists urged the governor to collaborate with the Legislature in developing legislation to ban all forms of fossil fuel infrastructure throughout the state.

The demands put forth by Extinction Rebellion Boston encompass various aspects of fossil fuel usage. The group seeks to ban power plants fueled by coal, oil, and natural gas. Furthermore, they call for a prohibition on new residential or commercial gas connections, airports, gas stations, liquified gas storage and production facilities, as well as natural gas distribution pipelines, transmission pipelines, and compressor stations.

Alex Chambers, organizer and spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion Boston, expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of action from the Governor and her Climate Chief in addressing the climate emergency. Chambers emphasized the urgency of immediate action, stating that the future of young people depends on government intervention in this decade and not waiting until 2050. Chambers concluded with a plea to Gov. Healey, urging her to take the necessary steps to introduce a ban on new fossil fuel infrastructure.

The release of carbon dioxide through the burning of fossil fuels plays a significant role in the warming of the climate. This spring, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere reached the highest levels seen in over 4 million years.

The actions of these climate activists reflect the growing urgency to address the climate crisis and transition away from fossil fuels. While their disruptive methods may have inconvenienced commuters, they aim to raise awareness and push for immediate action to mitigate the devastating impacts of climate change.

Governor Maura Healey has not yet responded to the activists’ demands, and it remains to be seen how this protest will influence her stance on fossil fuel infrastructure. As the climate crisis intensifies, the pressure for bold and decisive action continues to mount.
