A devastating wildfire has swept through the popular resort town of Lahaina on Hawaii’s Maui island, resulting in the loss of at least 36 lives and leaving behind a path of destruction. Terrifying video footage reveals neighborhoods and businesses engulfed in flames, with vehicles reduced to charred remains across the western side of the island. The ferocity of the wildfires has severed most escape routes out of Lahaina, trapping many people in the midst of the devastation.
Local resident Dustin Kaleiopu recounted the harrowing experience of his family’s evacuation, which left them with only minutes to spare and saw the destruction of two generational family homes. He expressed concern for the numerous individuals whom they have been unable to reach, emphasizing that homelessness has become a widespread reality for everyone he knows.

The wildfires ignited on Tuesday night, taking advantage of powerful winds generated by Hurricane Dora, which was several hundred miles to the southwest. As a result, 271 structures have sustained damage or been destroyed, according to reports from flyovers conducted by the U.S. Civil Air Patrol and the Maui Fire Department.
The fires swiftly tore through populated areas of Lahaina, leaving some individuals with no choice but to take refuge in the Pacific Ocean to escape the thick smoke and advancing flames. Dustin Johnson, who was working at Lahaina Harbor for a charter boat company offering tours, described the chaotic scene as the firestorm engulfed the surroundings. He recounted running from the flames and helping others along the way. Currently at Kahului Airport, typically a 25-minute drive from Lahaina, he shared his experience as the last individual to leave the dock.
In response to the crisis, various assistance operations have been mobilized, including the National Guard, U.S. Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Transportation is aiding evacuation efforts. Southwest Airlines has announced an increase in flights to Hawaii to support the ongoing evacuation endeavors.
While the exact cause of the Maui wildfires is yet to be determined, the National Weather Service attributes their rapid spread to a combination of dry vegetation, strong winds, and low humidity.
