Zimbabwe’s ban on the use of sex toys is being challenged by female activists who argue the legislation violates their freedom and infringes their rights. The country’s censorship and entertainments control law, which prohibits the import or ownership of adult toys, categorises the objects as being indecent, obscene and harmful to public morals, with breaches punishable by imprisonment. Women’s rights groups, who say notions of female sexual agency remain taboo in the country, are mounting challenges against restrictions not only on ownership of such items, but also on women’s contraception, marriage and how they dress.
