Watermelon Filter on TikTok Raises $11k for Gaza: Symbol of Support for Palestine

The watermelon has become a powerful symbol of support for Palestine on social media, thanks to a viral TikTok effect called ‘Filter for Good.’ This effect, featuring three large watermelon slices covering the screen, has been used over six million times and has already raised thousands of dollars. Its popularity is due to the watermelon’s resemblance to the colors of Palestine’s flag – red, black, white, and green.

To unlock the filter, TikTok users need to drag a piece of watermelon across the screen in a squiggle pattern, collecting virtual seeds along the way. This fun and interactive feature has caught the attention of many users. To access the filter, simply open TikTok, click on the magnifying glass to search, and type ‘Filter for Good.’ It will appear at the top under the ‘Effects’ heading. Tap the pink camera box to give it a try.

The creator of this impactful filter is Jourdan, an augmented reality (AR) creator. She has generously pledged to donate all proceeds from the filter to charities providing aid to Gaza. Through TikTok’s Effect Creator Rewards program, Jourdan will earn money based on its usage. So far, the effect has raised almost $11,000.

Watermelons have long been associated with Palestine due to their colors matching the flag. Now, the watermelon emoji has also become a sign of support amidst the ongoing conflict. Sadly, the death toll in Gaza has reached 11,000, making the need for aid even more urgent.

On TikTok, Jourdan shares daily update videos showcasing the money her filter has generated thus far. Although no donations have been made to Gaza charities yet, Jourdan will decide where the funds should go once they become available. This careful consideration ensures that the money will be directed towards the most pressing needs in the region.

By utilizing the power of social media and creative features, the Watermelon Filter on TikTok has not only raised significant funds but also sparked conversations and solidarity for Palestine. Its success is a testament to the importance of digital platforms in mobilizing support for causes worldwide.
