Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has lost his appeal against pre-trial detention on charges of espionage in Moscow, Russia. If convicted, he could face 20 years in prison. Gershkovich denies these allegations, as his lawyers call for bail or house arrest with conditions. The 32-year-old journalist was arrested in March and later charged in April with spying in Russia. Meanwhile, his newspaper, The Wall Street Journal, has strongly denied any accusations against Gershkovich, who was accredited by the Russian Foreign Ministry. Gershkovich’s parents, who left the Soviet Union for the US in 1979, were also present to support their son during the court hearing. The US government has also declared Gershkovich’s detainment as wrongful and has called for his immediate release. The court ruling upholds the decision to keep Gershkovich detained until August.
