Vietnam’s Progress in War Consequence Settlement Highlighted at USIP Annual Dialogue
The US Institute of Peace (USIP) recently held its annual dialogue on war legacies and peace in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. One of the key topics discussed during the September 14-15 event was the efforts made in handling war consequences and their impact on the development of Vietnam-US relations.
Lise Grande, President of USIP, expressed her delight at the significant progress in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the US. She also expressed her hope for breakthroughs in settling the consequences of war in the future.
Dr. Mira Rapp-Hooper, Special Assistant to the US President and Senior Director for East Asia and Oceania at the US National Security Council, emphasized that the bilateral relationship between Vietnam and the US is entering a new chapter that will contribute to regional and global peace, cooperation, and sustainable development.
Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Rinh, Chairman of the Vietnam Association for Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin (VAVA), stated that addressing war consequences is a crucial aspect of Vietnam-US relations. This cooperation not only contributes to reconciliation and trust-building between the two countries but also opens up new opportunities for collaboration in other important areas.
Various projects have been implemented to address war legacy issues, reflecting the joint efforts of Vietnam and the US. General Rinh stressed the importance of cooperation in environmental treatment, overcoming the consequences of bombs and mines, as well as addressing the issue of Agent Orange/dioxin in Vietnam.
Tim Rieser, assistant to former US Senator Patrick Leahy, who has played a significant role in promoting cooperation in war consequence settlement in Vietnam, believes that these programs have brought the two countries closer together and established a foundation for reconciliation and cooperation.
