US President Confronts Record Levels of Antisemitism, Criticizes Trump’s Response
US President Joe Biden addressed a group of American rabbis on Thursday, expressing his concerns about the alarming rise of antisemitism in the country. During a call made to commemorate the Jewish High Holidays, President Biden emphasized that antisemitism has reached record levels, posing a significant challenge for the entire nation. He also took the opportunity to criticize former President Donald Trump’s handling of the issue.
Biden argued that antisemitism has been given too much attention and prominence in recent years. He specifically referred to the 2017 Unite the Right white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, as a turning point that motivated him to run for president. The rally, triggered by protests against the removal of a Confederate statue, saw hundreds of white nationalists chanting anti-Semitic slogans such as Jews will not replace us! Trump’s response to the violence that unfolded during the event drew widespread criticism when he stated that there were fine people on both sides.

A report released in April by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and Tel Aviv University emphasized that the social and political climate in the United States has become fertile ground for antisemitism. The report revealed a disturbing normalization of expressions of hatred against Jews, with incidents of violence, vandalism, and harassment targeting the Jewish community on the rise. In fact, the ADL recorded more than 3,600 antisemitic incidents in the United States in 2022, the highest number since they began tracking the issue in 1979.
President Biden’s remarks come as an attempt to address the pressing concern of rising antisemitism in the country.
