US threatens to veto new Gaza ceasefire resolution at UNSC
Washington, DC, February 18 (ANI): The United States has issued a warning against a resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, stating its intent to veto the proposal at the UN Security Council.
US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, emphasized ongoing efforts to negotiate a deal between Israel and Hamas aimed at securing the release of hostages and implementing a temporary halt to the conflict.
While the resolution put forth by Algeria seeks an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, Thomas-Greenfield asserted that the US-backed proposal presents the most promising opportunity to reunite hostages with their families and deliver crucial aid to Palestinian civilians in need.
Addressing the Security Council, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, advocated for swift action on the ceasefire resolution, citing widespread support for the initiative.
In response, Thomas-Greenfield urged the council to align strategies that pressure Hamas to accept the current negotiation terms, underscoring the importance of diplomatic engagement to achieve a lasting solution.
