The US government has for the first time approved the sale of meat made from animal cells. Two Californian companies, Upside Foods and Good Meat, have been permitted by the Agriculture Department to offer “cultivated meat” products at restaurants and eventually supermarkets. The development ushers in a new era of meat production, aiming to reduce negative impacts on animal welfare and the environment, including those from grazing and from growing feed for animals. The two companies received federal approvals for necessary inspections in May, following a finding by the US Food and Drug Administration that their products were safe to eat. Ricardo San Martin, director of the Alt:Meat Lab at University of California Berkeley, warned that cost for synthetic meat could prevent it from having environmental benefits if the process became a niche product for the wealthy.
