AURORA, Colorado — The Air Force is reporting a resurgence in its recruiting efforts, expressing cautious optimism about its ability to meet its goals for 2024. After falling short of its active-duty recruitment targets last year for the first time in over 20 years, the Air Force has seen a significant turnaround, hitting its recruiting goals each month since the beginning of the fiscal year in October. Looking ahead to the second half of fiscal ’24, we continue to remain cautiously optimistic, said Brig. Gen. Christopher Amrhein, commander of the Air Force Recruiting Service. The Air Force is currently at around 101% of its month-to-month recruiting goals and has successfully filled job placements for February, March, and well into April.

The past few years have presented challenges for all branches of the military in recruiting the younger Generation Z, defined as those born between 1997 and 2012. With historically low unemployment rates and the private sector offering higher-paying jobs with better quality-of-life benefits, the pool of eligible candidates interested in military service has significantly dwindled. Compounding this issue, studies conducted by the Pentagon have revealed that only 23% of American youth are eligible to serve due to factors such as obesity, drug use, and physical or mental health problems. Additionally, less than 10% of the youth population is interested in joining the military, with many unable to name all the different service branches.

To address these challenges, the Air Force Recruiting Service has implemented various strategies to attract young people and remove barriers to service. Incentives such as medals and promotions for recruiting have proven effective, resulting in more than 600 referrals and the enlistment of 200 individuals. Changes to policies regarding tattoos have led to the recruitment of 176 airmen, while updates to body composition standards have allowed approximately 2,000 recruits to qualify for service despite one physical fitness test failure. The reinstatement of the Enlisted College Loan Repayment Program has benefited around 220 airmen, and a new smartphone feature allows airmen to send information on potential recruits to recruiters.

In fiscal year 2023, about 8,800 applicants dropped out of the recruitment process due to long timelines for gathering, reviewing, and correcting medical paperwork. Over 6,000 airmen who could have potentially joined the ranks were lost. Addressing this issue is one of the Air Force Recruiting Service’s next major endeavors, with efforts underway to expedite and streamline the medical processing timeline.

While the Air Force is making significant strides in meeting its recruitment goals, the Space Force, which falls under the Department of the Air Force’s recruiting umbrella, has historically faced fewer obstacles due to its smaller size. However, it is anticipated that the Space Force will also meet its recruiting targets this year.

In conclusion, the Air Force is experiencing a resurgence in its recruitment efforts, surpassing its monthly goals and making progress towards meeting its 2024 targets. With a combination of new policies and incentives, the Air Force Recruiting Service is successfully attracting a wider pool of potential recruits and addressing barriers to service. While challenges remain, the Air Force remains optimistic about its ability to build a strong force for the future.
