The U.S. Air Force has announced the activation of two electronic warfare detachments at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia, signaling a significant step towards enhancing the country’s spectrum warfare capabilities. The activation ceremony took place on October 25 and marked the progress towards establishing the 950th Spectrum Warfare Group. This group’s primary task is to assess the effectiveness of electronic warfare across a wide range of aircraft and improve jamming and spoofing capabilities during large-scale military exercises.
The establishment of the 950th Spectrum Warfare Group is an offshoot of the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing located at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. The wing, manned by engineers and specialists, focuses on developing software and code to counter electronic threats in the field. The activation of the detachments at Robins Air Force Base will allow for the identification of weaknesses in existing capabilities and provide valuable direction for future developments.
The U.S. Air Force, alongside the Army and Navy, is bolstering its investment in electronic warfare and the domination of the electromagnetic spectrum. The spectrum plays a crucial role in modern militaries as it is used for communication, navigation, and guiding weapons. Gaining control over this vital resource can determine the outcome of military operations.
Both Russia and China recognize the significance of the spectrum and are actively working to strengthen their own arsenal. However, according to a Pentagon assessment released earlier this month, China may face challenges in battles where spectrum access is fiercely contested.
Colonel Josh Koslov, the commander of the 350th Spectrum Warfare Wing, emphasized the importance of achieving spectrum superiority to ensure victory in conflicts. He quoted General Mark Kelly, the commander of Air Combat Command, who stated that failure to achieve spectrum superiority would result in rapid defeat for the forces.
Although the complete establishment of the 950th Spectrum Warfare Group is expected by 2027, Colonel Koslov has immediate goals in mind. The newly activated detachments at Robins Air Force Base, which already boasts a significant avionics footprint, will facilitate the mission.
Standing up these units today gives me the organizational capability to put mission on the table for warfighters, said Colonel Koslov. We’re depressurizing the administrivia of standing up an organization and allowing them to focus on mission earlier.
