Uttar Pradesh has been ranked first in the Child Vulnerability Index in relation to climate change, according to a report by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The Disaster Scorecard for states and union territories of India Report ranks the state’s vulnerability at 4.61. The index includes factors such as population and age group of children, infant mortality rate, and the number of out-of-school children. Experts at a dialogue on climate change and children organised by UNICEF and the department of environment, said children are the primary victims of natural disasters and are more vulnerable than adults due to their smaller physical size, physiological and cognitive immaturity, and dependence on caregivers for safety. They suggested that green schools, which aim to promote environmental sensitivity and sustainability, could help prepare children for calamities.
