Israel’s restrictions on humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip may amount to a war crime, the United Nations human rights chief said on Thursday. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk stated that Israel’s continued limitations on aid, coupled with its conduct of hostilities, may be viewed as employing starvation as a method of war, which is deemed a war crime.

Turk emphasized the dire situation facing the people of Gaza, describing their suffering as unconscionable. As the occupying power, Israel is obligated to ensure the provision of essential services like food and medical care to the population and to allow humanitarian organizations to deliver assistance effectively.

He highlighted that the crisis in Gaza is human-made and entirely preventable. Turk stressed the importance of all parties, especially those with influence, in urging Israel to facilitate the unimpeded entry and distribution of essential humanitarian aid and commercial goods to prevent starvation and avert the risk of famine. The full restoration of vital services such as food, water, electricity, and fuel is urgently needed.

The remarks made by the UN official shed light on the critical situation in Gaza and the need for immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
