Ukraine Boosts Defense: US-Delivered F-16 Fighter Jets Give Confidence in Countering Russian Invasion
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed his confidence in Ukraine’s ability to end Russia’s invasion after the promised deliveries of U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets. Speaking to a crowd in Denmark, Zelenskiy highlighted the crucial role of air superiority in ground success. The Danish Defense Minister, Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, stated that Ukraine would only be allowed to use the donated F-16s within its own territory. The initial delivery of six jets is expected around New Year, with a total of 19 F-16s to be donated by Denmark.
Russia, however, criticized the donation, claiming it would escalate the conflict. The Russian ambassador, Vladimir Barbin, argued that Denmark’s action seeks to leave Ukraine with no other choice but to continue the military confrontation with Russia. Russia currently occupies almost a fifth of Ukraine’s territory, and Ukraine is vigorously fighting to regain control.
The Ukrainian military views the F-16s as vital in their counteroffensive against Russia. Air force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat emphasized that air superiority is key to success on the ground. The jets will provide much-needed protection against Russian fighter jets attacking advancing Ukrainian forces.
President Zelenskiy hailed the decision as a breakthrough agreement, while Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov revealed that Ukrainian pilots have already begun training. However, it is estimated that it will take at least six months, possibly longer, to train engineers and mechanics. Denmark’s donation of the F-16s is intended to assist Ukraine in driving the enemy out of its territory, and Denmark strictly regulates the use of the gifted weapons.
The Netherlands is also considering donating some of their 42 available F-16s, but no decision has been made yet. The donation of these fighter jets is a significant development that strengthens Ukraine’s defense capabilities and underscores their determination to counter Russian aggression.
