The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has urged Congress to establish affordable housing measures amid surging inflation that has caused rent and housing costs to swell. Chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, Archbishop Borys Gudziak sent a letter to House and Senate Appropriations Committee leadership outlining the USCCB’s policies. About 10.7 million low-income renters spend over 50% of their income on housing costs, and the Catholic Church is the US’s largest private provider of housing services for the poor. The Archbishop’s letter requests Congressional support for more funding, as flat funding for housing and community development programs acts as a cut to vital services.
