Fire Breaks Out at Vancouver Apartment Complex, Leaving One Seriously Injured and Several Displaced

A two-alarm fire erupted at an apartment complex in Vancouver on Saturday night, resulting in one person sustaining serious injuries and multiple individuals being left without homes. The incident unfolded at around 8 p.m. on Northeast 102nd Avenue near 60th Street. According to Michael Shoemaker, a resident on the second floor, the situation quickly turned terrifying when he felt what seemed like an explosion from below. He immediately dialed 911 upon witnessing a thick cloud of smoke.

Mr. Shoemaker, drawing on his past firefighter training and instincts, swiftly took action alongside his son. Equipped with fire extinguishers, they sprang into action to rescue their neighbors. Shoemaker entered his downstairs neighbor’s apartment and managed to bring the man to safety. The fire crews from Vancouver arrived promptly and were able to gain control of the flames within 15 minutes. Nonetheless, one man sustained severe injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Clark County Fire Marshal’s office. Although Shoemaker’s unit was also impacted by the incident, he expressed gratitude that his family and neighbors survived the blaze. Another neighbor extended a helping hand by offering the Shoemakers a place to stay while they figure out their next steps. In an act of solidarity, the impacted families have set up a Venmo account under the handle ‘Justcharlene87’ to receive donations from those wishing to assist them in this challenging time.

Such incidents serve as stark reminders of the importance of fire safety measures and the bravery exhibited by individuals like Michael Shoemaker. It is essential to maintain awareness in our communities and take proactive steps to ensure the safety of ourselves and our neighbors.
