Tupac Shakur, the iconic rapper who was tragically killed almost three decades ago, has been honored in his hometown of Oakland, California. A street in Oakland has been renamed in his honor, paying tribute to the influential artist.
The newly named Tupac Shakur Way encompasses a section of MacArthur Boulevard between Van Buren and Grand avenues. A ceremony was held to unveil the street name, which was attended by Shakur’s family, friends, and fans. MC Hammer, another famous Oakland native, was also present to commemorate the occasion.
Sekyiwa Set Shakur, Tupac’s sister, expressed her pride and explained how important it was for her brother to promote love and peace in the Oakland community. She urged the crowd to let Tupac’s spirit live on both in the streets and in their hearts.
The decision to rename the road was made by the Oakland City Council, with the vote being unanimous. Councilmember Caroll Fife, who spearheaded the renaming effort, emphasized the alignment between Tupac’s values and the ongoing fight for justice and upliftment in society.
Tupac Shakur was known for his love for Oakland, and many attendees at the ceremony spoke about his impact. Richey Rich Double R, a rapper, described him as a leader and innovator, highlighting his unwavering fight for the people. Sway Calloway, a radio personality, emphasized Tupac’s advocacy for marginalized communities, stating that his influence resonated worldwide. Rapper E-40 added that Tupac’s significance went beyond music, as he was an advocate for the people and the culture.
Tupac Shakur died on September 13, 1996, after being shot six days earlier at the age of 25. Although his murder remains unsolved, a suspect was arrested in connection with the crime during the summer.
