A New York court will commence trial on March 25th for former President Donald Trump’s hush money case, where he faces 34 counts of falsifying business records. Judge Juan Merchan made the decision on Thursday and denied a motion to dismiss the case. This trial marks the first of four potential criminal trials for Trump. His defense team has made efforts to have the charges against him dropped. However, Merchan previously instructed Trump to cancel any other obligations during the trial. In attendance at Thursday’s hearing, Trump awaits the start of the trial.

While the trial unfolds, several states are currently holding primaries to determine the Republican presidential nominee for this year. Trump stands as the frontrunner after his easy victories in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg alleges that Trump falsified records back in 2016 in an attempt to suppress damaging stories during his presidential campaign. Bragg asserts that Trump faked records to conceal payments made to attorney Michael Cohen, who subsequently paid off Stormy Daniels, Karen McDougal, and former doorman Dino Sajudin. Cohen claims the payments amounted to approximately $420,000.

Prosecutors state that the Trump Organization made monthly installments and a year-end bonus check to Cohen. The charges brought against Trump in New York are considered a Class E felony, which is the least severe among felony counts in the state. These charges are the least serious among the four criminal cases Trump is facing.
