Trooper Shot Multiple Times in Illinois Attack, Suspect in Custody

Illinois State Police have released footage from a body camera capturing the harrowing officer-involved shooting that took place on October 24. The incident left Trooper Dakotah Chapman-Green injured and in critical condition. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Cristobal Santana from Chicago, is now in police custody facing multiple charges including Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm to a Police Officer, and Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

The incident unfolded around 10:44 p.m. in the 1600 block of Toronto Road. Santana opened fire on Trooper Chapman-Green, firing at least 10 shots and striking the officer multiple times. The trooper suffered serious injuries including facial fractures, a skull fracture, and a brain bleed.

The swift response from fellow officers on the scene was crucial in providing immediate medical aid to Trooper Chapman-Green until he could be transported to a local hospital. His family reports that he is currently in the hospital and recovering day by day.

Santana fled the scene after the shooting but was apprehended by law enforcement at approximately 1:58 a.m. on Wednesday. This was not Santana’s first encounter with the law – he is also a suspect in a Chicago homicide that occurred just a few days prior to the attack on Trooper Chapman-Green. Santana is believed to have shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, a special education teacher, on October 22.

Illinois State Police Director Brendan F. Kelly expressed gratitude for Trooper Chapman-Green’s survival, calling the attack brutal and highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in their line of duty. Kelly stressed the importance of law enforcement in maintaining freedom and ensuring the safety of citizens.

As the investigation unfolds, supporters of Trooper Chapman-Green and his family have the opportunity to make donations through the Illinois State Police Heritage Foundation website.

This shocking incident serves as a reminder of the risks that law enforcement officers take every day to protect communities and uphold the law. The survivor’s resilience and the dedication of his fellow officers in responding to the attack demonstrate their commitment to their noble, yet perilous, work. The Illinois State Police will continue to pursue justice for Trooper Dakotah Chapman-Green and hold the suspect accountable for his alleged crimes.
