Tragic Discovery: Missing 71-Year-Old Hiker Found Dead in Colorado Mountains, Faithful Dog Survives
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the lifeless body of 71-year-old hiker Rich Moore, who had been missing since August, was discovered in the Colorado mountains. However, there is a glimmer of hope in this tragic story as his loyal Jack Russell terrier, Finney, survived the ordeal and was found beside Moore’s body.
Moore and Finney set off on a hike to Blackhead Peak on August 19, situated in the rugged San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. The three-mile route with a daunting 2,500-foot elevation gain proved fatal, as Moore’s body was found by a local hunter in the Lower Blanco drainage basin on October 30.
The hike to the summit of Blackhead Peak is known for its rough and rocky terrain, with the final stretch being an unmaintained ‘social trail.’ As soon as Moore’s body was discovered, search and rescue efforts were initiated by the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office.
Despite the devastating outcome, the survival of Finney brings a ray of hope to this story. For over two months, the faithful dog endured the harsh wilderness before being transported to a local veterinary hospital. There, Finney was joyously reunited with her family, bringing some solace amidst the tragedy.
Authorities have not revealed the cause of Moore’s death, and no foul play is suspected. Prior to the discovery of Moore’s body, the Colorado Missing Person Organization had shared a flyer seeking information about the missing hiker and his loyal companion.
The recovery of Moore’s body was made possible by the efforts of local search and rescue teams, including Taos Search and Rescue. One member of the group, Delinda Vanne-Brightyn, shared her experience and extended condolences to the family, acknowledging the closure that can come from such challenging processes.
