Tragic Church Collapse Claims 9 Lives and Injures Dozens in Northern Mexico

Bishop Jose Armando Alvarez, from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tampico, described the roof collapse occurring during the distribution of communion. Efforts are underway to extract those still trapped under the debris while acknowledging the arduous nature of the task.
The bishop’s diocese shared an update on social media, expressing gratitude for survivors found under the rubble. The post highlighted the collaboration between rescue teams and the intervention of Divine Providence. As rescuers continue their work, prayers are urged for those awaiting rescue. A list of approximately 50 individuals taken to hospitals, including young children and infants, was also shared.
Video footage released by the state civil defense office showed the roof’s periphery being supported by makeshift wooden blocks. Nevertheless, initial attempts to lift sections of the collapsed roof with a crane were abandoned due to safety concerns. It was feared that dislodging one part of the crumbling structure could endanger any survivors still beneath.
Consequently, manual rescue efforts have resumed with the help of wood props and hydraulic jacks. Rescuers enter the debris, calling out and listening carefully for signs of any response. While search dogs did not initially detect survivors, the teams remain hopeful as they tirelessly continue their mission.
