A man from Thane, Maharashtra fell victim to a sextortion scam and lost Rs 6.5 lakh. The victim received a video call from a woman on WhatsApp where she began to undress herself, prompting the man to disconnect the call. After receiving further messages from the woman, the man was later contacted by someone posing as the Delhi police commissioner who informed the man that a sex racket was being run and his video was about to be uploaded on social media. The caller demanded a payment of Rs 50,000 to stop the video from being uploaded and different people continued to extort the man up to Rs 6.5 lakh over the next week. An FIR was filed, police have registered a case against 10 named persons and five other unidentified persons under Indian Penal Code Sections 420, 406, 34, and IT Act provisions. No arrests have been made yet and the police investigation is ongoing.
The victim, a 39 year-old man from Maharashtra’s Thane city, was working as a corporate consultant before falling victim to the sextortion scam and losing Rs 6.5 lakh.
