Tensions Rise as Taiwan Conducts Anti-Takeover Drill Amidst Heightened China Threat

Taiwan recently conducted its first-ever anti-takeover drill at Taoyuan International Airport, reflecting growing fears that China may launch an all-out war to seize Taiwan. In response, China deployed 29 ships and planes near Taiwan, raising concerns about potential conflicts that could involve the United States. With the risk of getting drawn into such a conflict, it is crucial for President Joe Biden’s administration to reassess its regional policies to protect America’s national interests.

The escalation in tensions began when 11 Chinese fighter planes crossed the median line between Taiwan and mainland China, flying up to the edge of Taiwanese airspace for the first time. This was followed by a record number of 16 Chinese warships sailing near the Taiwanese coast. These actions are part of a series of escalating military maneuvers by China since August 2022 when Nancy Pelosi, the then-Speaker of the House, visited Taiwan.

In response to these provocations, Taiwan and the United States have remained politically and militarily undeterred. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy angered Beijing when he met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen last April, and now Taiwanese Vice President William Lai Ching-te is planning a visit to the United States, which China is seeking to prevent. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin have also been involved in diplomatic efforts to rally support for American policies in the Indo-Pacific region.

Meanwhile, China continues its aggressive air and sea exercises near Taiwan while expanding its military capabilities in the South China Sea. China is modernizing its arsenal of nuclear missiles and has been producing medium- and long-range missiles that could potentially target US naval vessels and air bases as far as Guam.

The lack of communication between the top military officials of the US and China is concerning, especially given recent near collisions between US and Chinese ships and planes. The escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington have led both sides to adopt a tough posture, which increases the likelihood of war rather than decreasing it. It is imperative for the United States to take steps to lower tensions in the Indo-Pacific while maintaining its ability to defend its interests.

Since 1971, US policy toward China and Taiwan has been based on the one China principle, recognizing Beijing as the rightful government of China but not acknowledging Chinese control over Taiwan. The Taiwan Relations Act of 1979 ensures the United States provides defense articles and services to help Taiwan maintain its self-defense capacity. This policy has preserved peace and stability between the United States, Taiwan, and China, preventing crises from escalating into open warfare.

Given the significance of the US-China bilateral relationship, it is crucial to protect economic interests from Chinese espionage and maintain national security. While competition with China is essential, armed conflict should be avoided at all costs. Sustaining the status quo is the best approach to safeguarding American economic and military interests. A war in the Taiwan Straits would have catastrophic consequences for the United States, Taiwan, China, and the global economy.

In conclusion, tensions are rising between Taiwan and China, raising concerns about the potential for war and its impact on the United States and the global economy. It is vital for the Biden administration to reassess regional policies, reduce tensions, and prioritize America’s national interests. Maintaining the status quo through peaceful means is the best path forward to ensure peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
