Premature babies in India need mandatory screening for Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), an eye disease that affects around 200,000 newborns annually. Only 30,000-40,000 babies are screened, leaving thousands vulnerable to blindness. Early detection and treatment are crucial. The All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) calls for parents to bring pre-term infants for ROP exams under the government's '30 Din Roshni Ke' program. Treatment does not require general anesthesia and can halt the disease's progression in 90% of affected infants if identified and treated early.
