Suspended Michigan State Football Coach Faces Firing Amid Misconduct Allegations
Michigan State University is preparing to fire its suspended football coach, Mel Tucker, following misconduct allegations involving activist and rape survivor Brenda Tracy. Tucker expressed disappointment but claimed he was not surprised by the university’s decision and suggested that other motives may be at play. The university’s Title IX office conducted an investigation into Tracy’s complaint against Tucker, ultimately finding him in violation of misconduct. However, Tucker vehemently denies the allegations, labeling them as completely false.
The controversy surrounding Tucker began when Tracy, known for her work in educating athletes about sexual violence, accused Tucker of sexually harassing her during a phone call in April 2022. Michigan State paid Tracy $10,000 to share her story with the football team, and she had developed a friendship with Tucker through her advocacy efforts. However, their relationship took a drastic turn when Tucker masturbated during their phone conversation, according to reports.
In response to the impending termination of his contract, Tucker stated that he does not believe Michigan State University is seeking his dismissal solely based on his interactions with Tracy. He claims that the university had knowledge of the information forming the basis of his termination since at least March 2023. Tucker further alleges that it was only after Tracy and potentially others leaked the confidential investigation report to the media that the university decided to pursue termination.
Tucker, who is in the third year of a $95 million, 10-year contract, faces the loss of compensation if fired for cause. He admitted to investigators last spring that he engaged in masturbation during the phone call with Tracy, but he contends that it was consensual phone sex and outside the scope of Title IX and school policy. In contrast, Michigan State University found his actions to be unprofessional and unethical.
Alongside investigating Tucker’s alleged misconduct, the university is also probing the source of the leak that resulted in Tracy’s identity being revealed during the investigation into her allegations against Tucker. Tracy’s attorney, Karen Truszkowski, disclosed that a third party was responsible for the disclosure, triggering their cooperation with a USA Today report that included explicit details.
A hearing is scheduled for the week of October 5th to determine if Tucker violated the university’s sexual harassment and exploitation policy. The ruling following the hearing may take up to 60 days.
Tracy has yet to respond to messages requesting additional comment, but she previously stated on social media that Coach Tucker has been attempting to delay and obstruct the investigative process from the beginning. She argues that Tucker cannot afford to attend a hearing that will determine the credibility of the involved parties.
Tucker emphasizes that the investigation is intended to establish whether he violated policy, asserting that he did not. He emphasizes the importance of allowing the process to unfold before any sanctions are imposed, echoing the principle of basic fairness.
