Storm Hilary Triggers Devastating Floods and Mudslides in Southern California

Parts of Southern California and the US Southwest are facing the aftermath of Storm Hilary, which has caused widespread flash flooding, landslides, and mudslides. This powerful storm has brought record-breaking downpours and posed a significant threat to millions of Americans in the region.

Remnants of Storm Hilary have moved north, dumping heavy rains from the California-Mexico border up through Las Vegas and into parts of the Northwest. The National Weather Service issued flood and high-wind advisories, watches, and warnings for around 17 million people.

One of the hardest-hit areas is Palm Springs, California, where the city’s 911 system was knocked out due to the storm. Flooding and debris flows have been reported, leaving no way in or out of Palm Springs and many other areas in the Coachella valley. Mayor Grace Garner expressed the dire situation during an interview, stating that residents are currently stranded.

Although Hilary has been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, a steady rain persisted on Monday morning, exacerbating the already record-breaking downpours. Forecasters predict that some mountain and desert areas could see rainfall accumulations of 5 to 10 inches, which is equivalent to the amount typically received in an entire year.

Officials have issued warnings that dangerous flooding could persist as the rain gradually dissipates throughout the morning. Flash flooding, landslides, mudslides, and debris flows pose significant risks to roadways and neighborhoods. The National Weather Service indicated that the historic rainfall could cause life-threatening to locally catastrophic situations.

As a result of the storm’s impact, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for much of Southern California. President Joe Biden also ordered federal agencies to assist by deploying personnel and supplies to the region.

Prior to reaching the US Southwest, Storm Hilary affected Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, resulting in the loss of one life, flash flooding, and the destruction of roads. Upon crossing the border, the storm hit San Diego county as the first recorded tropical storm and reached Los Angeles county for the first time since 1939. Additionally, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook Southern California north of Los Angeles as the region took precautions for the incoming storm.

Ventura County, located northwest of Los Angeles, reported that the bulk of the rainfall has passed through with no significant road closures. However, authorities continue to assess any additional damage caused by the storm or the earthquake, such as fallen trees.

The impact of Storm Hilary in Southern California serves as a reminder of the devastating power of these weather events. The region remains on alert as the cleanup and recovery process begins, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of natural disasters.
