Storm Betty Causes Flooding and Power Outages Across Ireland

Storm Betty wreaked havoc across Ireland, causing widespread flooding and power outages. The storm’s impact was felt particularly in areas such as Cork, where flash flooding and fallen trees disrupted roadways. In Dungarvan, Co Waterford, a boat broke free and crashed into the harbor, while Tramore Racecourse was waterlogged. The clean-up operation is in full swing, with road crews working tirelessly to clear debris and fallen trees.

ESB networks are working diligently to restore power to hundreds of homes and businesses affected by the outages. Most areas are expected to have their power restored by late morning or early afternoon. However, some areas in the east and southeast may experience delays.

In Dublin, fallen trees were reported in various locations, including Templelogue Road, Lower Rathmines Road, Ushers Quay, and Anglesea Road in Ballsbridge. A taxi driver in Templelogue narrowly escaped injury when a tree fell on his car while he was driving. The North Strand also saw a tree land on three vehicles, but fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The storm caused disruptions to transportation as well. Train services between Cork/Cobh and Midleton lines were temporarily suspended, while an FAI Cup fixture between Cork City and Waterford had to be postponed. Galway United’s FAI Cup meeting with Dublin at the UCD Bowl was also abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow rain and wind warning for Donegal, Leitrim, and Sligo, with potential impacts including spot flooding, difficult travel conditions, and water overtopping on coasts. The warning is set to expire later in the morning.

Looking ahead, the weather is expected to remain windy, with heavy or thundery rain in the north and northwest. However, sunny spells are anticipated in other areas with scattered showers. Winds will ease, but strong and gusty winds may persist along exposed coasts. Temperatures are set to range between 18 to 22 degrees Celsius.

As the cleanup and recovery efforts continue, people are advised to take precautions and stay safe. Although the worst of Storm Betty has passed, there may still be residual damage and localized flooding. Authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution and to report any road hazards they encounter.

Overall, Storm Betty has left its mark on Ireland, causing flooding, power outages, and transportation disruptions. The affected regions are now focused on recovery and restoration, with hopes of returning to normalcy as soon as possible.
