South Korea and Turkey Strengthen Bilateral Ties Through Mega Projects

South Korea and Turkey are set to exchange high-level visits in early 2023, aiming to launch mega projects that will further deepen their close bilateral relations. Turkish Ambassador Salih Murat Tamer emphasized the enduring bond between the two countries, stating that their deeply-rooted ties, which he described as bloodshed, will remain unchanged regardless of any government changes.

Tamer highlighted South Korea as one of the few countries that Turkey considers a friend, ally, and brother. He expressed excitement about the upcoming high-level visits, where new mega projects will be unveiled in various fields. Although he refrained from disclosing specific details about these projects, he emphasized their significant benefits for both Seoul and Ankara.

In the aftermath of a massive earthquake that struck Turkey in February, Tamer personally experienced the deep affection and support of the South Korean people. He expressed gratitude for the swift response and warm condolences from the South Korean government and citizens during that time. South Korea had sent hundreds of rescue and relief workers, provided humanitarian aid, and helped build temporary settlements for the earthquake victims.

The discussion between the two countries also involves exploring opportunities for South Korean companies to participate in Turkey’s reconstruction work. Tamer acknowledged South Korea’s expertise in building roads, buildings, and infrastructure, and believed that their involvement would be valuable in the reconstruction efforts.

Additionally, the Turkish ambassador noted that Turkey has played a mediating role in various international conflicts, such as the Israel-Hamas war and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He stated that Turkey, with its contacts with both Israel and Hamas, could potentially act as a mediator, emphasizing that violence cannot solve the underlying problems.

Looking to the future, Tamer expressed his desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, energy, defense, and tourism. He hoped to increase the number of flights operated by Turkish Airlines between Seoul and Istanbul, as well as encourage more Korean tourists to visit Turkey. Tamer also envisioned expanding Korean investment in Turkey, particularly in artificial intelligence and IT sectors.

South Korea and Turkey share a long history of cooperation, particularly during the Korean War in the 1950s when Turkey dispatched troops to aid South Korea against the North. Tamer emphasized that the blood brothers relationship between the Turkish and Korean people dates back almost 1,500 years when they fought together against common enemies.

In summary, South Korea and Turkey are poised to enhance their already close bilateral relations through upcoming high-level visits and the launch of mega projects. With shared values and a history of cooperation, both countries are committed to advancing their ties across various sectors, contributing to mutual prosperity and growth.
