Smash Mouth Lead Singer Steve Harwell’s Life Hanging by a Thread in Hospice Care

Steve Harwell, the lead singer of the American rock band Smash Mouth, is reportedly in hospice care with his life hanging by a thread. According to his manager, Robert Hayes, Harwell has been diagnosed with liver failure and may have only a few days left to live. The 56-year-old singer has been surrounded by his family and friends at his home, where they have gathered to say their final goodbyes.

Harwell’s battle with alcohol abuse problems has been well-documented, and it seems to have taken a toll on his health. Despite the difficulties he faced, his fiancé, Esther Campbell, has been by his side throughout this challenging period. Campbell had previously filed a restraining order against Harwell in 2019, leading to speculation about their relationship. However, during his time in hospice care, she has been providing him with care and support.

The rock singer’s health issues have been ongoing for several years. In 2013, Harwell was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disease that can ultimately lead to heart failure. His condition worsened over time, prompting his retirement from performing in October 2021. During his last performance at The Big Sip beer and wine festival in New York, Harwell faced criticism for slurring his words, swearing at the audience, and seemingly making a Nazi salute.

In his retirement statement, Harwell expressed gratitude for having lived out his dream of being a rock star. He acknowledged the honor of performing alongside his bandmates and expressed appreciation for their shared journey.

Formed in 1994, Smash Mouth rose to fame in the early 2000s with hits like Walkin’ on the Sun, All Star, Then The Morning Comes, and their cover of The Monkees’ I’m A Believer. Two of their most popular songs, All Star and I’m A Believer, became even more iconic after being featured on the soundtrack of the 2001 DreamWorks film, Shrek.

Unfortunately, Harwell has experienced personal tragedy in the past. In 2001, his newborn son Presley, whom he shared with his ex, Michelle Laroque, passed away from complications related to acute lymphocytic leukemia.

As fans and the music industry mourn the potential loss of Steve Harwell, it is essential to respect his privacy and support his family during this difficult time. Harwell’s contributions to the world of rock music will always be remembered, and his legacy will live on through his unforgettable performances and iconic songs.
