Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has caused a stir on social media after a video surfaced showing him snatching an umbrella from a protocol officer in Paris, leaving her drenched in the rain. The incident occurred as Sharif arrived in Paris to attend the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact. The 45-second video shows Sharif wearing a grey suit trying to grab an umbrella being held by the officer. After a few seconds, he proceeded to take the umbrella from her and walked alone while the officer followed him in the pouring rain. She walked behind him until he reached the entrance of the venue.
The video has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with users expressing varying opinions. While some users criticized the protocol officer for not using another officer’s umbrella, others accused Sharif of being disrespectful. Meanwhile, some users compared Sharif’s behaviour to that of Mr. Bean, a fictional British television character known for his comic misadventures
Despite the controversy, Sharif met with several world leaders, including heads of the UN and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). During the summit, he highlighted the challenges faced by developing nations, particularly because of climate change and stressed the need for a fair and equitable formula for the distribution of financial resources to mitigate the suffering of developing nations and ensure peace. The summit, which is expected to discuss climate change-related financing issues, will hold six round tables, including overhauling the international financial architecture, restoring confidence, forging partnerships for strategies, and creating an enabling environment for the private sector.
