SeaWorld Opens First Orca-Free Park in UAE, Expanding Beyond the US

SeaWorld has opened a new aquatic life park in Abu Dhabi, the company’s first venture outside of the US. The park is the result of a joint venture with state-owned developer Miral and features the world’s largest aquarium, but no orcas. The company has faced criticism and controversy in recent years over its treatment of marine mammals, particularly following the release of the documentary Blackfish in 2013. The film, which focused on a trainer’s death at SeaWorld Orlando, led to a decline in visitor numbers and accusations of animal cruelty. In 2016, SeaWorld stopped its orca breeding programme.
