Chemong Public School, located just north of Peterborough, Ontario, is currently facing a series of disturbing incidents that are being investigated by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Two of these incidents are being labeled as anti-Pride acts, which has raised concerns among the school community.
Principal Deb Strain recently shared in a letter to parents that on the first day of school, an anti-Pride picture was discovered in the schoolyard. This incident has deeply saddened the staff and students at Chemong Public School, as it goes against the values of inclusivity and respect that the school community holds dear. Additionally, over the summer vacation, two Pride flags were stolen from the flagpole outside the school, further fueling the concern.
To compound the distress, three break-ins occurred at the school over the Labor Day weekend, resulting in damage to a door and surrounding glass. While it is not yet clear if these incidents are connected, they are all being taken seriously by school officials and law enforcement.
The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board has promptly notified the Peterborough County OPP about the recent incidents and has requested increased police presence around the school during after-hours. This is aimed at reassuring the students, parents, and staff, and sending a strong message that such hateful acts will not be tolerated within the school community.
Principal Strain emphasized that Chemong Public School remains committed to building a culture that is respectful, inclusive, and free from discrimination and harassment for everyone. The Pride flag will continue to be flown proudly at the school, despite these unfortunate events.
