Russian Invasion Updates: Civilian Casualties and Infrastructure Damage in Ukraine

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with devastating consequences for civilians and infrastructure. According to the operational information released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on October 9, 2023, the situation remains highly challenging in eastern and southern Ukraine.

Throughout the day, there were 34 combat engagements, reflecting the intensity of the ongoing armed aggression. The enemy launched 1 missile and 39 air strikes, and also fired 23 times from multiple launch rocket systems, targeting both Ukrainian troops and populated areas. Tragically, these Russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries, as well as the destruction and damage of private houses and other civilian infrastructure.

In the Volyn and Polissia directions, the operational situation remained unchanged, with no signs of offensive groups forming. However, there are certain units of the Armed Forces of Belarus operating in the border areas adjacent to Ukraine, raising concerns about the potential for further escalation.

In the Siversk and Slobozhansk directions, the enemy maintains a military presence along the border areas, shelling settlements from Russian territory, and increasing the density of minefields along the Ukrainian state border. Areas such as Halahanivka in the Chernihiv region, Dihtiarne and Stepne in the Sumy region, and around 10 other settlements have been targeted by air strikes, artillery, and mortar fire.

The Kupiansk direction has also witnessed intense fighting. Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled five enemy attacks near Sinkivka and Ivanivka in the Kharkiv region. The enemy launched air strikes near Kindrashivka, Petropavlivka, and Pishchane, while over 15 localities, including Dvorichna, Petropavlivka, Kyslivka, and Synkivka, were subjected to artillery and mortar fire.

In the Lyman and Bakhmut directions, Ukrainian defense forces faced multiple enemy attacks. In the Lyman direction, they repelled seven enemy attacks near Makiivka in the Luhansk region, while in the Bakhmut direction, Ukrainian defenders thwarted four enemy attacks near Klishchiivka in the Donetsk region. Several localities, including Bilohorivka, Siversk, Spirne, Razdolivka, Vuhledar, Prechistovka, Blahodatne, and Urozhayne, were subjected to artillery and mortar fire.

The Avdiivka direction saw 15 enemy attacks successfully repelled by Ukrainian Armed Forces near Mariinka and Novomykhailivka in the Donetsk region. Air strikes were carried out in the area, and approximately 15 settlements, including Krasnohorivka, Mariinka, Heorhiivka, Pobieda, and Novomykhailivka, were targeted by the occupiers’ artillery.

The enemy also conducted attacks in the Shakhtarsk direction, with Ukrainian defenders repelling an attack near Staromayorske in the Donetsk region. Around 10 localities, including Vuhledar, Prechistovka, and Blahodatne, were affected by artillery and mortar fire.

In the Zaporizhzhia direction, the Ukrainian defense forces effectively repelled an enemy attack near Levadne, while air strikes were launched near Mala Tokmachka and Robotyne. Over 30 settlements, including Orikhiv, Novodanilivka, Robotyne, Mali Shcherbaki, and Pyatikhatky, were subjected to artillery and mortar fire.

Further south in the Kherson sector, the enemy conducted air strikes near Zmiivka and Beryslav, while Prydniprovske in the Kherson region and Dmytrivka in the Mykolaiv region came under hostile artillery and mortar fire.

Amidst the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian Defense Forces continue offensive operations in the Melitopol sector and offensive (assault) operations in the Bakhmut sector. These operations aim to inflict losses in manpower and equipment on the occupation forces, while depleting the enemy along the entire front line.

On October 9, the Defence Forces’ aviation carried out 10 strikes on areas concentrated with enemy personnel, weapons, and military equipment. In particular, missile troops targeted a command post, an ammunition depot, and two areas of concentration for personnel, weapons, and military equipment, alongside an enemy electronic warfare station.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of abating, and the toll on civilians and infrastructure continues to escalate. It is crucial to find a peaceful resolution to this crisis in order to spare innocent lives and rebuild the affected areas. The international community must remain vigilant and urge for a diplomatic solution to prevent further suffering in Ukraine.
