Kharkiv region. Russian forces subjected the city of Kharkiv to an attack with S-300 missiles on January 16, wounding at least 17 people and damaging more than 20 homes and a medical facility.

On January 17, Russian forces bombed the Kupiansk area, striking an administration building in the settlement of Malyi Burlak. The attack killed one person and wounded two children.

Kherson region. A Russian missile attack on the settlement of Besyslav on January 17 severely wounded three civilians. Simultaneously, Russia struck the city of Kherson, killing one person and leaving more than 15 homes without heating.

The Ukrainian hacking group Blackjack, reportedly linked to Ukraine’s intelligence services, recently penetrated the computer system of a Russian state construction organization, pilfering technical data for 500 new military sites, including arsenals, missile bases, headquarters, and troop barracks. The group also disabled seven servers and more than 150 computers.

French defense minister Sébastien Lecornu announced the establishment of the Artillery Coalition for Ukraine on January 17, aiming to provide artillery and ammunition. France plans to deliver 50 AASM aerial bombs to Ukraine every month, along with nearly 80 mobile Caesar cannons in the near future.

Swiss President Viola Amherd expressed her country’s intention to provide Ukraine with nearly $1.75 billion of immediate financial support during a press conference in Davos, Switzerland, on January 16. Amherd emphasized that humanitarian demining would be Switzerland’s strategic priority to facilitate the return of displaced people to their homes and farms.

At the Ukrainian Breakfast Discussion held during the World Economic Forum week in Davos, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis stressed the need for increased support to Ukraine, stating, Ukraine needs 400 rather than 40 HIMARS systems and 1,000 rather than 80 tanks if its partners want Ukraine to win. The Baltic countries and Poland are concerned about potential Russian aggression if Ukraine is not adequately supported.

The documentary 20 days in Mariupol by Ukrainian filmmaker Msytslav Chernov has received two nominations for the BAFTA Film Awards. The film, capturing the first weeks of Russia’s siege of Mariupol, is one of the contenders in the categories of Films not in the English language and Documentary. The documentary previously won a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of Russia’s devastating impact on the city.

The Rift: Ukrainian Art in Resistance, an exhibition showcasing artworks made since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, opened on January 17 at Kansas University in Kansas City. The exhibit explores Ukrainian artists’ responses to the ongoing war, decolonial memory, and contested history. The featured artists include Piotr Armianovski, Yevgenia Belorusets, Nikita Kadan, Alevtina Kakhidze, and others. The exhibition will run until February 16.
