Russian Air Defenses Foil Ukraine’s UAV Attack over Crimea
Russian air defenses successfully thwarted a drone attack launched by Ukraine over the Crimean Peninsula, according to reports from the Russian Defense Ministry. The state-run Tass news agency stated that Russian air defenses detected a total of 42 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) flying above Crimea, of which 33 were suppressed by radio electronic warfare aids and subsequently crashed before reaching their intended targets.
The Russian Defense Ministry held Ukraine responsible for the attack, labeling it an attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out terrorist acts using aircraft-type UAVs on Russian territory. Fortunately, no damage or casualties were reported as a result of the engagement above central Kaluga Region, located southwest of Moscow.
In a separate incident, Ukraine’s air defenses successfully repelled an aerial assault launched by Russia’s naval fleet. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense reported shooting down two Kalibr cruise missiles, two KH-59 cruise missiles, and an Iranian-built Shahed UAV. The missiles were fired from warships in the Black Sea and a destroyer in the Sea of Azov, while the UAV targeted the Dnipro region, having been launched from the direction of Prymorsko-Akhtarsk.
These attacks occurred just hours after Ukraine celebrated its Independence Day with a defiant parade in Kyiv. Displaying burnt-out Russian tanks and damaged military hardware, Ukraine showcased its determination to repel the ongoing invasion by its neighbor. President Volodymyr Zelensky commemorated the day with understated observance, and behind-the-scenes events were organized due to fears of potential Russian missile or drone strikes.
