Russia Loses 960 Troops, 124 Vehicles, 51 Artillery Systems in a Day: Kyiv

Russia suffered significant losses in a single day of fighting in Ukraine, according to an update from Kyiv’s military on Tuesday. The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported that Russia lost 960 troops, along with a total of 124 armored combat vehicles, military vehicles, and fuel tanks, as well as 51 artillery systems.

The casualty toll of Russian troops now stands at a staggering 377,820, with 960 soldiers lost in the past 24 hours alone. These figures are part of Kyiv’s daily update on Russia’s troop and equipment losses. It is important to note that Newsweek has been unable to independently verify Kyiv’s figures and has reached out to Russia’s Defense Ministry for comment.

According to the update, Russia has experienced significant losses throughout the ongoing war in Ukraine. The figures indicate that Moscow has lost a total of 6,214 tanks, 11,548 armored combat vehicles, 11,956 vehicles and fuel tanks, 8,947 artillery systems, and 331 military jets.

Estimates of casualty numbers typically differ, with Ukraine’s figures often surpassing those of its Western allies. Moscow rarely shares information on the number of casualties it has sustained in the war. In September 2022, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stated that 5,937 troops had been killed since the conflict began. The defense ministry has since reported casualty numbers three more times, confirming the loss of an additional 162 troops.

A joint investigation by the BBC’s Russian Service and independent Russian news outlet Mediazona further revealed the names of 41,731 Russian military personnel who have died in the war in Ukraine since February 2022. However, the investigation suggested that the actual number of losses may be higher than those stated.

According to various reports, a significant proportion of Moscow’s losses in the ongoing war in Ukraine can be attributed to President Vladimir Putin’s convict army. It is believed that a lack of training among Russia’s military has contributed greatly to the high death toll in Ukraine.

Furthermore, independent Russian-language news outlet Vazhnye Istorii (iStories) reported that in the fall of 2022, Russia’s military command sent thousands of unprepared soldiers to the front lines in an attempt to halt a Ukrainian offensive in Svatove, a city in the eastern Luhansk region. One parent of a Russian soldier, who was drafted under Putin’s partial-mobilization decree, disclosed that her 23-year-old son was forcibly sent to fight in Ukraine against his will.

While Kyiv does not provide updated information on its war casualties, a leaked U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency assessment from April 2023 estimated Ukraine’s casualties to be between 124,500 and 131,000, including 15,500 to 17,500 deaths. Russian Defense Minister Shoigu stated in December 2023 that Ukraine has lost over 383,000 troops since the conflict began.
