Russia has reportedly doubled the number of militarised dolphins being used to protect key assets in the Black Sea, according to images published by the British Ministry of Defence. Established defences include four layers of nets and booms across the entrance to Sevastopol harbour on the annexed Crimean peninsula. The dolphins are among a complex system of defences that include anti-ship missiles, S-300/S-400 long-range air defences and specialist artillery. It is understood that Russia has trained a variety of animals for different missions, although the Sevastopol harbour-based mammals are believed to be focused on countering enemy divers. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed there are plans afoot to recapture Crimea.
