Title: Rukum Earthquake Aftershocks Continue as Experts Urge Construction of Earthquake-Resistant Structures

At least 483 aftershocks have been recorded in Jajarkot and West Rukum since November 3, with experts stressing the urgent need for earthquake-resistant structures. A team of experts from the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology and the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre conducted a preliminary study at the epicenter, Ramidanda in Jajarkot, following the 6.4 magnitude earthquake.

After collecting valuable data, the experts have returned to Kathmandu. To enhance future monitoring efforts, they have installed two seismometers in Jajarkot and two others in West Rukum. According to Lokvijay Adhikari, a representative from the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, all four seismometers are in excellent working condition.

While it is estimated that around 10 small earthquakes occur daily in Nepal, the recent surge of 483 earthquakes within a week is cause for concern. Adhikari emphasizes that although aftershocks release trapped energy, it would be misleading to assume that no major earthquake will strike the area. He cautions against the ability to predict future earthquakes but advises stakeholders and local communities to collaborate in constructing earthquake-resistant houses and public buildings as a proactive measure to mitigate potential damage.

Shiba Subedi, a seismologist from the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology and a member of the expert team, highlights the significance of studying and evaluating both small earthquakes and aftershocks. Doing so allows experts to gauge risks and minimize potential damage. The team’s preliminary study reveals that settlements in hills and highlands, such as Chiuritol, Thaple, Ramidada Hill, Thamkama Hill, and Athbiskot Municipality, have suffered the most. Notably, earthquake waves travel slower, remain constant, and cause more damage in hilly regions compared to sandy and plain areas where waves travel faster, according to Subedi.

Subedi echoes Adhikari’s call for constructing earthquake-resistant structures, reiterating that Nepal is highly susceptible to earthquakes. The devastating consequences of the November 3 earthquake support this urgency, with a substantial number of casualties attributed to weak physical structures. It is essential to recognize that earthquakes with a magnitude of 5 release energy equivalent to a 6-magnitude earthquake, while 1,000 earthquakes of 5-magnitude would release energy equivalent to a 7-magnitude earthquake.

The earthquake on November 3 originated from Ramidada in Barekot, Jajarkot, and affected four local units in the district and three local units in West Rukum. Tragically, it resulted in the loss of at least 153 lives and left over 200 injured. The Ministry of Home Affairs has revised the death toll to 153 from 157 on November 6, citing the duplication of some names.

Efforts are underway to understand the seismic activities in the affected regions better. The installation of seismometers, collection of data, and subsequent research will provide valuable insights into earthquake patterns. With these insights, experts aim to enhance disaster preparedness and foster community resilience.

In conclusion, the recent surge in aftershocks following the devastating earthquake has reinforced the urgent need for earthquake-resistant structures in Nepal. Stakeholders, local communities, and experts should collaborate to construct buildings capable of withstanding seismic events. By implementing proactive measures, Nepal can reduce the potential damage caused by future earthquakes and protect the lives of its citizens.
