Riyadh’s RSH Street Art Festival has breathed new life into an abandoned building in the city, while simultaneously beautifying the area and fostering a sense of community. The festival, organized by the Saudi Ministry of Culture’s Visual Arts Commission, showcases the work of more than 30 international, regional, and local artists and runs until December 6.

According to Basmah Felemban, co-curator of the festival, the event celebrates the diversity of street art as a practice and provides a platform for artists to engage in workshops, lectures, and discussions. It aims to spark conversations and deeper reflections on the role of street art in society.

As part of the festival, two artworks will be permanently relocated to key areas in Riyadh: one by ST4 Collective to Municipal Square and another by Saudi artist San Shyn to Sunset Park. These installations will not only contribute to the beautification of the city but also serve as cultural landmarks.

The festival features a wide range of artistic styles and themes. One notable artwork is Saudi artist Bolotron’s Bolotron 808 – Cyber Vision, a futuristic depiction of a cyber-obsessed Kingdom. Other artists draw inspiration from social issues and the promising future of Saudi Arabia. For example, artist Fouad Alghareeb captures the anticipation surrounding the 2034 World Cup in one mural and pays tribute to the country’s emerging auto industry in another.

The festival also showcases international talent, such as Martha Cooper, a renowned photojournalist known for documenting graffiti culture in New York City during the 1970s and 80s. Her collection of photos displayed digitally at the festival offers a glimpse into the history and evolution of street art.

In addition to the visual displays, the festival actively engages the public through workshops, lectures, street performances, skate classes, competitions, and film screenings. These activities aim to educate and inspire both aspiring artists and the general public.

A highlight of the festival is the Art of the People Area, where visitors can unleash their creativity on the building’s walls using various materials, including paint and non-toxic chalk. This collaborative effort will transform the concrete into a collective artwork.

The RSH Street Art Festival not only enhances the cultural landscape of Riyadh but also promotes collaboration, collectiveness, and knowledge exchange. Through its diverse range of artwork and engaging activities, the festival creates a vibrant and inclusive space for the community to come together and appreciate the power of street art.

Overall, the festival’s mission to beautify the city, build communities, and celebrate the art form of street art resonates with visitors and artists alike. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the diverse expressions of street art while contributing to the cultural enrichment of Riyadh.
