Refugee Crisis in Eastern Chad Worsens as Violence in Sudan Displaces 442,250 People

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to a dire refugee crisis in eastern Chad, with an alarming number of individuals seeking safety. Violent clashes that started on April 15 have forced a staggering 442,250 people to flee Sudan and cross the border into Chad. Among this influx are 80,986 Chadian returnees who have also joined the ranks of those in need of protection and support.

Adding to this already overwhelming situation are the 427,024 Sudanese refugees who have been residing in 13 camps and one village in eastern Chad for more than ten years. The town of Adré alone has provided shelter to 241,966 individuals, despite its population of only 68,431. The influx of refugees, returnees, and resident communities has put immense strain on an area already grappling with a lack of infrastructure and essential services.

The region’s vulnerability is further exacerbated by challenges related to water scarcity, health emergencies, and food security. The volatile agro-climatic conditions and underdeveloped nature of the area affect not only the local communities but also nomads, refugees, and returnees. As a result, a residual need for humanitarian assistance persists.

In recent months, the central province of Guéra has witnessed intercommunal conflicts that tragically resulted in more than 15 deaths between June and August 2023. This further complicates the humanitarian crisis in the region, demanding urgent attention and action.

According to the March 2023 Harmonised Framework, which was revised in July 2023 to reflect the impact of the Sudan crisis, an alarming 949,456 people in the eastern provinces are currently facing severe food insecurity. Without emergency aid and livelihood support, this number is expected to rise. Additionally, access to water is a major issue, with less than 50% of the eastern provinces having reliable access. Furthermore, only a mere 33% of health facilities in the region possess a functioning water point. Shockingly, the rate of open defecation exceeds 80%.

The gravity of this humanitarian crisis cannot be understated, and immediate action is necessary to address the dire situation faced by the refugees, returnees, and the resident communities in eastern Chad. Ensuring access to clean water, healthcare, and food security must be prioritized. The international community must come together to provide vital humanitarian aid and work towards sustainable solutions that address the root causes of the crisis. Only through joint efforts can the suffering of thousands of innocent lives be alleviated, and hope be restored in this troubled region.
