The football world is in mourning after the untimely death of Ray Lewis III at the young age of 28. Like his NFL Hall of Famer father, Lewis III pursued a career in football and played as a cornerback in college. He began his football journey as a running back at the University of Miami Hurricanes in 2010 after a successful high school career, but eventually switched to cornerback during his two seasons at the college. He later transferred to Coastal Carolina in 2015 and then to Virginia Union, where he recorded 37 total tackles in his senior year.

Lewis III recently played for the Wyoming Mustangs, a professional indoor football team. The cause of his death has not yet been announced, but his former coach, Mark James, paid tribute to him in a social media post. James wrote, Young man, it was a pleasure to bring you to Virginia Union. Ray Ray, may God bless your family. Great young man. Lewis III’s brother, Rahsaan, also shared a heart-wrenching farewell on Instagram, saying, Really can’t believe I’m even typing this but RIP big brother. A true angel – I pray you’re at peace now because I know how much you were really hurting. I don’t and won’t ever have the words, man, because this pain right here…I love you, I love you, I love you.

The 5ft9, 175lbs Lewis III was a three-star recruit out of Lake Mary Prep, and was named to the Florida Class 2A All-State First Team in 2013. As a redshirt freshman, he appeared mostly in special teams for the Miami Hurricanes, and his contributions earned him admiration from his teammates. However, he experienced a challenging end to his college career and did not get to fulfill his dream of playing in the NFL like his father.

The details of Lewis III’s tragic death are still emerging, but the loss has sent shockwaves throughout the football community. His talent and dedication to the sport made him a respected player, and his untimely passing is a reminder of how fragile life can be. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
